Today, the Colorado AI Policy Work Group, made up of a diverse membership including groups representing consumers, hospitals, school districts, and other users of technology, and large and small technology companies, convened by Governor Polis, provided strong support on a policy framework that addresses the use of AI and Automated Decision Making Systems (ADMT) in consequential decisions about consumers.

The Colorado AI Policy Work Group was launched last fall with the goal of protecting consumers, allowing innovation to thrive, and ensuring that Colorado is not left on an island. This work group spent countless hours investigating national policy trends, identifying policy goals and risks, and negotiating the framework agreed upon today, with refinements to be addressed during the legislative process.

“I am very grateful to the hardworking members of the Colorado AI Policy Working Group that have reached a unanimous agreement on AI policy to protect consumers and support innovation in our state. I look forward to supporting the recommended framework as legislation moves through the process, and commend the Colorado AI Policy Work Group for their efforts to get us here,” said Governor Jared Polis.

The approved framework builds upon the important work of Senate Majority Leader Rodriguez, the many House sponsors who care deeply about this topic, and organizations, companies and individuals who have worked tirelessly on this issue.

The framework developed by the AI Policy Work Group will ensure that Coloradans are aware when AI or ADMT is used to impact important decisions that affect their lives. Under this proposal Coloradans will receive an up-front notice when AI or ADMT is being used in these life-altering decisions, and if the decision is adverse, then they will have access to more information about the decision, an opportunity to correct wrong information, and request that a human review the ultimate decision.
